How Does It Rain Fish?

  •  Fish don’t usually fall from the sky, but this unusual meteorological phenomenon is possible, although rare.
  • Many countries throughout history have reported fish rain. Raining animals are seen in countries like Spain, France, India, Ethiopia, Singapore, and the United States.
  • In Honduras, the phenomenon of it raining fish is a yearly occurrence. It is called “Lluvia de Peces.” The small town of Yoro has this happen once and sometimes twice a year.

EXPLANATION –

Scientific Explanation-

  • The reason for this odd occurrence is that strong air disturbances, such as tornadoes can lift water and fish up into the air.
  • Then, the tornado can carry them for some distance. When the tornado becomes weaker, its energy cannot hold objects up off the ground any longer, and it begins to rain fish. This can also be referred to as “animal rainfall,” but often, the event is simply described as “raining fish.”
  • A tornado is a very strong wind that twists around itself. The inside of the tornado, known as the vortex, contains calm air. The outside air moves upward and around the calm center. The air at the bottom of the tornado is constantly moving upward, so new air is pulled up after it as the air moves. This draws in objects underneath the tornado and sends them upward.
  • Fish live in water, but tornadoes usually begin over land. If the tornado then moves over water, it can create what is known as a waterspout. Instead of pulling air upward, it pulls water upward. Fish in the water can also be drawn out at the same time.

Religious Explanation

In Yoro, the explanation often offered up is religious rather than scientific.

  • There is a religious explanation in the town for the cause of the animal rain. A Catholic priest living in the area named. Father Jose Manuel Subirana, a Catholic priest living in the area, prayed that God provides sustenance to the hungry peoples, and, at the end of his marathon prayer session, it is said to have rained small fish. The festival, which began in 1998, is held in honor of the miracle that is the Lluvia de Peces, and a parade is held where Sculptures of Father Jose Manuel Subirana are carried through the streets.

Some Interesting facts about FISH RAIN

  • Sometimes, the animals are still alive and can be seen moving once they hit the earth. Other times, they are deceased.
  • In the 1970s, National Geographic documented the rain of fish. Although it was not 100% proven that the fish were coming from the sky, this brings credibility to the story.
  • One of the most bizarre things about the rain of fish is that it does not have fish that are local to the area and are carried over 200 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.

LIST OF EVENTS THAT TOOK PLACE

1) The residents of the Bhadohi district in Uttar Pradesh were taken by surprise when they witnessed fish falling from the sky with strong wind during heavy rain. Small fishes started falling with the rain in the Chauri area of the district. It’s common to see hail storms with rain, but it is rare to witness fish rain. The locals were surprised to see fish rain, and a few even panicked. The locals collected around 50 kilograms of fish but threw it in ponds and pits fearing the fishes being poisonous. As per local media reports, small fishes started falling from the sky during the rain near the Kandhiya Gate area of Chauri. The rain was accompanied by heavy wind. As soon as the news spread, local residents started collecting the fish. The excited villagers collected fish from rooftops, fields, orchards, and other areas. According to meteorologists, sometimes this happens due to the formation of a low-pressure area. The cyclonic wind formed near the river, pond, and other water bodies also blows away the fish, and these types of surprising things are seen in the surrounding areas during the rains.

2) In Texarkana, a city in Texas, it ‘rained’ fish on Thursday. Many Texarkana residents were surprised when they saw fish dropping from the sky along with rain.
