We’ve all heard the name, maybe we’ve seen it on the news, others surely have heard about Manny Pacquiao, the world-class boxing champion or those of us fortunate enough have even visited the Philippines. Located in Southeast Asia in the western Pacific Ocean, the Philippines is a tropical sanctuary, renowned for its abundance in beaches, its fresh fruit, and its lively culture. It also hosts a huge number of limestone caves, many of which, to this day, remain undiscovered. All in all, the Philippines is a great hub for tourists from around the world, as it has a ton to offer. However, what many of us may not know is what the Philippines consists of, the geography that makes up the Philippines. Today, let's open the box and dive into the unknown. Today, let’s explore more about the interesting unknown about the Philippines.
At a glance, the Philippines does already seem to be a group of quite deconstructed, tiny islands scattered in one general area. However, did you know that the Philippines consists of more than a jaw-dropping 7,500 islands? Formally known as an archipelago, meaning a stretch of water containing many islands, the Philippines is thus also a host to a wide range of animal species, natural gems, home to thousands of beaches, and much more.
Let’s uncover one at a time:
Animal species of the islands of the Philippines: From the largest to the smallest.
1. Two of the longest snakes known to man are both found in the Philippines, the famous King Cobra, and the Reticulated Python.
Both these beasts are well acclimated to the luscious rainforests of the Philippines and thrive in these conditions. With an average length of 3-4 meters and 4.78 meters respectively, the King Cobra and the Reticulated Python respectively weigh around 170 kilograms. However, both being nocturnal don’t pose the biggest threat to responsible/abiding humans.
2. Home to the smallest known primate in the world.
Tarsier, a fluffy Yoda-like animal with eyes the size of saucers, is the world’s smallest primate who lives in the Philippines. Although endangered in the ruthless extremes of today's world, the Tarsier seeks refuge in the hands of non-profit organizations such as the Tarsier Foundation, Corella, Bohol, etc. In fact, the Tarsier is so important to the Filipinos (Filipino refers to the people native to the Philippines) that they even have it on the back of their 200 Peso note (Peso is the currency in the Philippines).
Geographical gems of the Philippines:
1. Chocolate Hills:
Located on the Bohol islands in the heart of the country the Chocolate Islands consist of many hills of homogeneous sizes that look very aesthetically pleasing. For as far as the eye can see the viewer gets a mesmerizing view of the rich vegetation of the luscious hills. They derive their name from when this same vegetation turns a chocolate brown colour in the dry summer months. Scattered over 50 square kilometers, there are at least 1,250 hills but here are believed to be more than 1,770 hills.
Although mesmerizing, this image does little justice to the true beauty of this spectacular phenomenon. Check out the video linked below to find out more.

2. Puerto Princesa Underground River:
Located on Palawan Island on the west side of the Philippines, the Puerto Princesa River is so mesmerizing that it was even selected to be among the new 7 wonders of the world, and a UNESCO world heritage site. The river itself is located under massive limestone caves and is famous for boat rides among tourists. Only present in the cave and along the river, one is sure to find new species of fascinating animals scattered all along.
As you have probably gotten to know already, the Philippines is an awe-inspiring archipelago that we are very fortunate to have in our world. The scare of global warming is very real, and given its island-loaded embodiment, the Philippines is extremely prone to the harshest destruction that comes along with it. We as a society should act immediately in a scrupulous way to do whatever is in our power to preserve such beauty.
On a lighter note, despite being gifted with natural gems, the people of the Philippines also have some impressive accomplishments to their name. For example, the people of the Philippines are the largest users of social media in the world. Furthermore, the Philippines was a Spanish colony for 300 years and was later ruled by the US for another 44. Throughout its history, the Philippines has earned a name for itself. Its flag also tells an interesting story and holds a symbolic, patriotic meaning.
